Crustal thickness and magma storage beneath the Ecuadorian arc

چکیده

The Northern Andes of Ecuador contain some the most active volcanic systems in and extend over a broad region from Western Cordillera to Subandean Zone. While it is known that arc straddles range basement compositions, accreted mafic oceanic terranes west silicic continental east, details crustal structure beneath unclear despite being critical for understanding magmatic tectonic processes this portion Andes. To gain insight into these processes, we create two 3D models upper mantle seismic properties throughout region. first highlights discontinuity using receiver functions, which allows recovery thickness Ecuadorian We observe ~50 65 km under high elevations, with thicker crust lower elevation compared higher Eastern Cordillera. This can largely be explained by density variations within are consistent observed at surface, implying depth. second model combines our functions Rayleigh wave dispersion data ambient noise measurements joint inversion construct 3-D shear velocity model. shows several mid-crustal (5–20 below sea-level) low zones volcanoes maximum ~14% melt. These likely represent long-term magma storage predominantly crystalline reservoirs, “mush zones”. Furthermore, depth inferred reservoirs centers (e.g., Chiles-Cerro Negro Tungurahua) agreement previous geobarometry geodetic modeling. Our results provide new observations possible other less-studied as well, further contributes mounting number indicating melt percentages mid-crust systems.

for a crustal magma reservoir beneath the upper east rift

An anomalous body with low Vp (compressional wave velocity), low Vs (shear wave velocity), and high Vp/Vs anomalies is observed at 8–11 km depth beneath the upper east rift zone of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii by simultaneous inversion of seismic velocity structure and earthquake locations. We interpret this body to be a crustal magma reservoir beneath the volcanic pile, similar to those widely re...

Water storage and amphibole control in arc magma differentiation

Arc magmas are distinguished from those of other tectonic settings by several first order characteristics; 1) they tend to be realtively differentiated with even the most mafic rocks in a suite typically ≥50% SiO2, 2) they typically contain high H2O contents and 3) they have distinctive trace element signatures. The “standard” model for arc petrogenesis involves melting of a mantle wedge, preco...

Mushy magma beneath Yellowstone

[1] A recent prospective on the Yellowstone Caldera discounts its explosive potential based on inferences from tomographic studies which suggests a high degree of crystallization of the underlying magma body. In this study, we show that many of the first teleseismic P-wave arrivals observed at seismic stations on the edge of the caldera did not travel through the magma body but have taken longe...

Time-scales of magma formation, ascent and storage beneath subduction-zone volcanoes

There is now su ̄ cient information to attempt an integrated model for melt generation, transfer and storage beneath subduction-zone volcanoes. Fluid release from the subducting oceanic crust into the mantle wedge may occur over a period ranging from a few hundred kyr, to as little as less than 1 kyr, before eruption. This supports models in which ®uid addition is closely linked to partial melti...

Magma chamber behavior beneath a volcanic edifice

[1] The construction of a large volcanic edifice at Earth’s surface generates stresses in the upper crust whose magnitude is comparable to those of tectonic stresses and overpressures within a magma chamber. We study how this affects eruption behavior. Analytical calculations are carried out in two dimensions for a cylindrical reservoir with an internal overpressure in an elastic half-space wit...
